Arizona Hombu Karate Dojo

Traditional Okinawan Martial Arts (Karate, Kobudo, Self-Defense, Samurai Arts)

Martial Arts Classes

Soke (grandmaster) Hausel began karate training in the 1960s & later taught martial arts and self-defense at private gyms and four universities, prior to opening the Arizona Hombu Dojo in Mesa. For this reason, our classes focus on adults and families. If you have kids interested in martial arts, they need to be focused and disciplined, and must train with their own parent or grandparent. Usually, we like them to be about 10 years old. In addition to karate, Soke has certifications in several martial arts, so, there are many things to learn in our dojo, but the primary focus is traditional Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo with opportunities to learn samurai arts. If your child is a teenager, they are welcome to train at the dojo as an adult.

Attend as many classes as possible all for a monthly, price - Pay as you go (no contracts) just $125/month/individual (cash or personal check). Martial arts training provides valuable health benefits that you cannot get from a gym or health food store. Family rates are $150 for two members, $175 for three and $200 for four. The only other fees are for periodic kyu/dan rank exams (these are not required). Fees for rank are $50 for kyu ranks (color belts) and $250 for dan ranks (black belt).

See below for more information on exams. And, we reserve the right to refuse training to anyone.

Classes at the Seiyo no Shorin-Ryu Karate Hombu in Arizona are limited to 25 & we have a mix of men, women, and families

  • Private Lessons - $50/hour.
  • Private Class. A weekly class for yourself and a friend $300/month for two - bring a friend, you can split the cost.
  • We also offer special clinics on some Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 am, and an annual Arizona-Utah Shorin-Ryu clinic in the Spring.

  • Periodically, members are asked to test for rank in karate and kobudo. Depending on the individual, this typically occurs after 2 to 6 months of training. If you pass, you will be promoted and awarded rank certification after a fee is paid. If you do not pay the fee, you do not pass.

  • All mudansha ranks (9th kyu to 1st kyu) known as color belts, are $50/rank.

  • All yudansha ranks - $250. Most yudansha tests can be completed in one evening, with exceptions of Sandan (Sensei) & Godan (Shihan). These two require considerable evaluation & only those who show total dedication in training & attendance are considered. Typically, it takes a few weeks or more for these two tests.
  • Special rates are available for families.
